We honor the sacred rite of passage into parenthood by holding space with reverence, ancestral wisdom, and heart-centered support—guiding families to make soul-aligned choices through every phase of the birth & postpartum journey.

The best time to leave your home in labor is…

When you no longer feel safe in your home.
When your contraction pattern is 3-1-1.
When you would like an epidural.
When you feel like you have to poop.

It’s important that you have these conversations with your partner and your birth team over and over again BEFORE you go into labor. What would it look like if you were planning a home birth and your labor starting varying from normal? What happens if your labor is going faster than the average and you still haven’t left your home for your birth center birth? What happens if you’re high risk and you go into labor at the supermarket on a Sunday afternoon?

You have to know and decide when the best time is for YOU to go to your birthing place based on your preferences and/or circumstances. Labor and birth is not a one size fits all and your doula is there to make sure to individualize your experience.

A big question first time moms or moms who’ve never experienced natural labor contractions (either due to pre-labor induction or c-section) is, “when will I know when I’m in labor?” I’m here to tell you that trust and believe you will know!

Some moms will experience practice contractions prior to contractions that lead to the true labor experience. This may be a confusing and/or frustrating time for you as you work to figure out the meaning of the sensations you are feeling especially if this lasts over the coarse of a week or more.

Not to fear, these practice contractions are normal and can be used just as that, practice for your true labor. How are you reacting to the practice contractions? Do you tighten up every muscle in the body? Are you holding your breath? Is your mind racing thinking about what comes next? Take advantage of the sensations brought on by the practice contractions to slow down and PRACTICE for actual labor.

Let’s normalize “boring” childbirth. Not all births are “movie” births. Hollywood has to make it interesting so it sells. *cue huge gush of water breaking in the middle of the grocery store only to be rushed to the hospital and have the baby in the parking lot*

But you? Your job is to mind your business and birth that way you need to whether that’s roaring like a lion or as quiet as a mouse. Understanding that a lot of the discomfort in birth comes from resistance will bring you closer to a better birth.

Writing this post reminds me about how I labored with deep breathing and humming and also some grunting. It also reminds me of how my grandma passes her entire day humming while doing mindless tasks.

The breathing exercises shared are only two of the ways to stimulate your vagus nerve for an easier birth experience.

Dance, dance, take a nap, drink some water, and keep on dancing!!! Did you know that dancing can reduce discomfort in labor, shorten the duration of labor, promote spontaneous labor, and improve maternal satisfaction with childbirth?

Why? Dancing helps boost oxytocin, a principle labor hormone, especially when you’re dancing to music you like with the people you love! Dancing also gets all of your pelvic joints to move which encourages baby to engage.

Walking is meditation. Meditation is birth prep. Tune in to the sounds around you to pull you into the present moment. Meditate on your fears and let them go. Meditate on your wishes and dream.

Anytime you’re faced with a challenge, take a walk around the block and see how you feel afterwards. You may be surprised by what you find.

Walking is meditation. Meditation is birth prep. Tune in to the sounds around you to pull you into the present moment. Meditate on your fears and let them go. Meditate on your wishes and dream.

Anytime you’re faced with a challenge, take a walk around the block and see how you feel afterwards. You may be surprised by what you find.

Here’s a bonus! You can dance típico at a wedding while your baby sleeps soundly on your chest!

This postpartum awareness week I want to highlight one of my favorite postpartum activities, babywearing!

Babywearing has allowed me to keep my baby close while I do all the things that require the use of two hands, ie. cooking, cleaning, gardening, etc. And once I figured out how to wear her on my back, it was OVER! There’s nothing I can’t do while wearing my baby girl.

Such a special time wearing her on my vacation to the Dominican Republic, remembering and honoring the traditional practices that kept our babies close like they were meant to be. Did you know humans are “carry” mammals? More on that in another post.

Nutrition* in general is important to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle. When you’re pregnant, your body needs optimal nutrition to support the growth of your baby and to give you the strength to carry on a healthy pregnancy.

Healthy nutrition should be maintained during labor and postpartum to provide you with the fuel/energy needed to birth and heal.

I took this picture at a birth in a @nychealthsystem hospital. My client has been diagnosed with gestational diabetes** and was told that they could not have anything by mouth until she births her baby and if she did, only clear foods and fluids would be accepted.

Apple juice is high in sugar (24g/cup), jello (16g of added sugar), “sugar free” pudding (artificial sweetener: Sucralose, Acesulfame Potassium), white sugar (6g) for the tea, and broth which is likely high in sodium. How is this ok for someone with a high risk pregnancy, specifically gestational diabetes or high blood pressure? How is staving someone ok? Why not provide high protein meals/snacks for this particular case? Nuts, meat, boiled eggs, lentils, etc. We already know not eating throughout labor is an outdated practice.***

Please do not get tired of asking about the whys and the how’s of the medical recommendations before you make an informed refusal or consent. Lean into your community to help you prepare your labor snacks/meals if you choose an out of home birth.

Hospitals will have no choice but to improve if, and only if, we demand it.

Day 1 of my Menstrual Phase and I made it my priority to rest and pour into me as soon as I got home this evening. Day 2 will be a full day of rest, keeping my womb (prep the rice sock) and body warm, and taking it easy peasy. We can do it all, but guess what, we don’t have to!

First time harvesting my lemongrass that I brought over from the motherland 🇩🇴 and some ginger root for this delicious and amazing smelling infusion. Can’t wait for the weather to warm up for this beauty to really take off. For now it’ll keep living on my window sill.

Myth Busted: Obstetricians (OB) are for high-risk/medicalized pregnancy & surgical birth. Midwives are specialized in low-risk pregnancy and birth.

Pregnancy is not a sickness and should not be treated as such unless your current pregnancy has truly been diagnosed high risk.

Medicalized management of low-risk pregnancies can result in unnecessary interventions, increased risk of cesarean and operative birth.

If you are low-risk, I highly recommended seeking the care of an out of hospital Midwife. If an out of hospital birth is not an option, find one that is midwifery led.

Myth Busted: Obstetricians (OB) are for high-risk/medicalized pregnancy & surgical birth. Midwives are specialized in low-risk pregnancy and birth.

Pregnancy is not a sickness and should not be treated as such unless your current pregnancy has truly been diagnosed high risk.
